Reforesting Hawaii’s Native Ecosystems
The Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative (HLRI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring Hawaii’s native forests and promoting environmental sustainability. Founded in 2014, HLRI has planted over 500,000 native and endemic trees across more than 1,200 acres on Hawaii Island and Oahu. Their work goes beyond tree planting; HLRI is focused on developing entire ecosystems that support Hawaii’s unique flora and fauna, including endangered bird species like the Hawaiian hawk (ʻio) and Hawaiian owl (pueo).
By reforesting species such as koa, ‘ōhi‘a, and sandalwood, HLRI not only restores Hawaii’s natural beauty but also fights climate change by sequestering carbon, preserving watersheds, and preventing soil erosion. The initiative uses cutting-edge RFID technology and drone monitoring to track each tree’s health and growth, allowing sponsors to follow the progress of their contributions.
