KULEANA CHARTER

A Declaration of Stewardship for Support Local Hawaii

The Kuleana Charter expresses the shared values and responsibilities that guide the community stewardship movement of Support Local Hawaii.

Support Local Hawaii was created with a deep sense of responsibility to the islands we all love.

This platform exists not simply as a website, but as a commitment to uplift the people, culture, and ecosystems that sustain Hawaii. The work we undertake here is guided by the understanding that our choices today shape the world that future generations will inherit.

The Kuleana Charter serves as the foundation for this movement. It is a statement of the values and responsibilities that guide Support Local Hawaii and those who participate in it.

Our organization is guided by a Founding Charter that outlines the values, responsibilities, and purpose of this stewardship movement.

Our Shared Responsibility

Kuleana means responsibility.

It reminds us that we are caretakers of something larger than ourselves — our communities, our cultural traditions, and the land that sustains life across these islands.

Support Local Hawaii exists to help encourage and strengthen this shared responsibility.

Through collective action rooted in aloha, we can help ensure that Hawaii remains vibrant, resilient, and grounded in its cultural foundations.

Our Guiding Principles

The movement is guided by values that have long shaped life in Hawaii.

  • Aloha

Aloha is more than a greeting. It is a way of living that reflects compassion, humility, respect, and care for others.
Through aloha we recognize the interconnectedness of all people and all life.

  • Mālama ʻĀina

The land and ocean sustain us. Mālama ʻāina reminds us that caring for the environment is not optional—it is a sacred responsibility.

  • Kuleana

Each of us carries a role in caring for our communities and our islands. When we act with integrity and responsibility, our collective actions create lasting positive impact.

  • ʻOhana

Community is strengthened through relationships. We are connected through shared history, shared land, and shared responsibility for the wellbeing of one another.

  • Pono

To live pono is to strive for balance, honesty, and righteousness in our decisions and actions.

Our Commitment

Support Local Hawaii commits to operating in service to the community, the ʻāina, and the cultural traditions that shape Hawaii.

This platform will always seek to:

• Uplift local farmers, businesses, artists, and makers
• Support cultural knowledge and traditions
• Encourage responsible stewardship of Hawaii’s ecosystems
• Strengthen community relationships and resilience
• Promote choices that benefit future generations

Every decision made within this movement will strive to reflect these values.

A Movement of Participation

Support Local Hawaii belongs to the community it serves.

The strength of this movement comes not from any single organization or individual, but from the collective actions of people who care about the future of Hawaii.

Every person who chooses to support local businesses, care for the ʻāina, share knowledge, or uplift their community is part of this effort.

Together we can create a legacy that honors the past while nurturing the future.

A Living Commitment

The Kuleana Charter is not a static document. It is a living commitment.

As our communities evolve and new challenges arise, the spirit of this charter will continue to guide the movement with humility, wisdom, and respect.

Together, through aloha and shared kuleana, we help ensure that Hawaii’s culture, communities, and ʻāina continue to thrive for generations to come.

Mahalo nui loa to everyone who walks this path of stewardship for Hawaii.
