The Local General Store – Where Pastry Meets Purpose & Butchery Honors ʻĀina

At Support Local Hawaii, we’re honored to showcase The Local General Store on the platform—a one-of-a-kind Bakery and Whole-Animal Butcher Shop grounded in Aloha, Sustainability, and Local Sourcing.

Founded by Harley Tunac Chow and Jason Chow, this beloved local business is redefining what it means to eat well in Hawaii—connecting community to food in a way that’s both delicious and deeply rooted in kuleana.

🌺 The Heart Behind the Business

What started as a dream has blossomed into a vibrant gathering place for those who care about where their food comes from. Part bakery, part butcher shop, and all heart—The Local General Store specializes in:

🥐 Artisanal pastries made with locally grown fruits & vegetables
🥩 Whole-animal butchery focused on zero waste and local sourcing
🌱 Sustainable food systems built on relationships with Hawaii’s farms
🧡 Community care and culinary excellence

Every croissant, sausage, and hand-crafted pâté tells a story—of place, people, and purpose.

About Harley Tunac Chow – Pastry Artist & Culinary Leader

Born in Honolulu, Harley’s journey led her from neuroscience studies in San Francisco to award-winning bakeries like Jane the Bakery, where she helped earn the title of “Best Croissants in SF.” A graduate of the James Beard Foundation’s Women in Culinary Leadership Program, she brings not just refined pastry techniques—but also the powerful influence of women-led kitchens and a deep love for Hawaii.

About Jason Chow – Butcher, Cook, and Food Systems Advocate

Jason, also born in Honolulu, found his path through marine conservation, culinary discovery at Mud Hen Water, and full-circle food education at The Local Butcher Shop in Berkeley. A member of the Eater Young Guns Class of 2019, Jason brings a regenerative mindset to meat—transforming whole animals into ʻono, intentional offerings that honor the land and reduce waste.

🌿 Why We Listed Them On The Platform

Because this is more than food. It’s a movement.
Jason and Harley are creating something rare in Hawaii: a space where food is made with integrity, where every bite connects you to Local Farms, Cultural Wisdom, and a Sustainable Future.

We are proud to showcase their story—and invite you to taste the difference when Love, Land, and Leadership come together.
