Elevating Hawaiian Culture and Knowledge
The Edith Kanakaʻole Foundation (EKF) is a Hawaiian cultural-based non-profit established in 1990 to perpetuate and advance the teachings, practices, and philosophies of the late Luka and Edith Kanakaʻole. The foundation’s mission is to elevate Hawaiian intelligence through cultural education, focusing on the traditional knowledge of the land, natural resources, and indigenous practices.

At the heart of EKF’s work is the preservation of Hawaiian language, hula, and chants, as well as land stewardship through the restoration of culturally significant places. One of the foundation’s most impactful programs is Hālau o Kekuhi, an internationally acclaimed hālau hula (dance school) known for its deep education in Hawaiian genealogy, language, and cultural protocol. In recognition of their invaluable contributions to Hawaiian culture, the hālau and its teachers have been honored as Living Hawaiian Treasures.

EKF also plays a key role in offering cultural workshops, scholarships for Native Hawaiian students, and consultancy on Hawaiian spiritual and cultural matters. Edith Kanakaʻole’s legacy continues to inspire future generations, embodying the spirit of Aloha ʻĀina (love for the land) and Hawaiian resilience.
