Reviving Hawaii’s Traditional Crops for a Sustainable Future
Founded in 2016, the Hawai‘i ‘Ulu Cooperative is a farmer-owned network dedicated to revitalizing traditional Hawaiian staple crops, with a focus on ‘ulu (breadfruit). Based on Hawaii Island, this cooperative has grown to over 160 member farms across four islands, working together to produce sustainable, nutritious food while promoting food security and climate resilience. The co-op’s mission is to make local staple crops such as ‘ulu, kalo (taro), ‘uala (sweet potato), and pala‘ai (squash) more accessible to both residents and visitors, all while supporting small-scale Hawaiian farmers.
Hawai‘i ‘Ulu Cooperative produces a variety of products, including their popular ready-to-cook ‘ulu packs and value-added creations like ‘ulu hummus and ‘ulu chocolate mousse. By fostering partnerships with schools, food hubs, and retailers, the co-op aims to create a thriving local food economy that highlights Hawaii’s agricultural heritage. Additionally, their innovative aggregation and processing facilities allow farmers to easily distribute their crops, ensuring fair and stable prices for the farmers and healthy, locally grown food for the community.
